Mr. Mader, Board Chair, served on the Board of Advisors of GeoHazards International for sixteen years prior to joining the Board of Trustees in 2007. Since 1962 he has worked with Spangle Associates Inc., Urban Planning and Research, where he serves as president. His work has involved collaboration with earth scientists to develop ways of mitigating geologic hazards through land use planning that has included research funded by USGS, NSF and FEMA. His public service has included: the California Earthquake Safety Foundation, 1985-2001; the Policy Advisory Board for the Bay Area Regional Earthquake Preparedness Project, 1984-1992; and the Seismic Safety Commission of California, 1975-1984 (chairman 1979-1981). He chaired the Land Use Advisory Group, Joint-Legislative Committee on Seismic Safety for California, 1969-1974. He received the "1992 Award for Excellence in Teaching" from the School of Earth Sciences, Stanford University, where he was a Senior Lecturer for thirty years (1970-2000) and in 2003 he was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Planners.
