No one knows when or where the world's next devastating earthquake
will strike. But it is known that the people in cities of developing
countries are the most at risk, that their risk is increasing
rapidly, and that something can be done to help them.
Since GHI's founding, we have learned a good deal about what
is required of us in order to help these people. GHI must be
a nonprofit organization to gain trust and avoid conflicts of
interest. It must have a network of active partners and supporters.
It cannot (as seen in
Cariaco) depend exclusively on government funding. We have
established an Endowment Fund to cover GHI's baseline expenses
and enable it to continue to seek funding for special projects
from international aid organizations and foundations.
GHI also depends upon its broad network of members. A strong
membership increases GHI's intellectual capital by collecting
the ideas and experiences from a wide variety of professions
and societies. GHI’s network permits a greater exchange
among people in the communities in need and the experts who
can help. A multidisciplinary and international GHI membership,
by its very existence, makes a strong public statement about
the gravity of the problem of the world's growing urban earthquake
risk and the need to find a solution.
We invite all people committed to helping reduce death and injury
due to earthquakes in the world's most vulnerable communities
to become a member of GHI.

About GHI Individual Membership
Membership primarily entails lending your name to the GHI cause
of promoting global earthquake safety. In addition, your contact
information will be available to other GHI members, unless you
request that it be withheld. Finally, GHI asks members for annual
dues that enable us to demonstrate the commitment of GHI members
as active participants in the work of our organization..
As a member, you have several privileges. You have the opportunity
to apply your expertise where it is needed the most through
our contacts. You have access to GHI publications free of charge.
Membership also enables you to make public your commitment to
earthquake safety. We welcome your earthquake-related reports
and articles that we can post on this website.
Given the urgency of our work and the progress that we have
made, we hope that you will become a member and work with us
on our journey Toward Global Earthquake Safety.
About Corporate Support of GHI
The large and rapidly growing seismic risk of developing countries
is a global problem that requires a global solution. The solution—global
earthquake safety—requires knowledge, resources, energy
and resolve. For this, we need the cooperation of concerned
citizens, governments, multi-lateral development institutions,
non-profit organizations, and corporations.
GeoHazards International is well positioned to link efforts
among these sectors. As a supporting partner, you will participate
in our journey Toward Global Earthquake
Safetyby helping us create a better future for vulnerable
developing countries. As a supporting corporate partner, you
will also protect your own investments, employees and customers
in these countries. We are grateful for the vision and continuing
support of our founding partner, the OYO Corporation, and we
invite you to join them and other supporting partners who share
our mission: to reduce death and suffering—particularly
among children—due to earthquakes and other natural hazards
in the world's most vulnerable communities through advocacy,
preparedness, prevention and mitigation.
As a corporate partner of GHI,
you can assist us to work when and where the need is greatest.
Our corporate partners provide a platform from which we can
continue to seek project-specific funding from international
aid organizations, multi-lateral development institutions, corporations
and foundations. Your involvement will demonstrate that you
consider the world's growing earthquake and other natural hazards
risks to be a serious problem and that you have confidence in
GHI to help solve it.
As a corporate partner, you will also
benefit. You will make public your commitment to earthquake
and other natural hazards safety. Your contribution to help
improve earthquake safety will be recognized by the world's
government and societal leaders, earthquake risk experts and
those whom your leadership will influence and inspire. By helping
to reduce avoidable dearth and injury—perhaps of your
own employees, colleagues and customers—you will know
that you have responded to a critical need and, in an important
way, improved the future.
Given the urgency of GHI's work, the progress we have made,
and the importance of our future initiatives, we hope that you
will partner with GHI, and, in this way, join us in our journey
Toward
Global Earthquake Safety.
