Board of Trustees

GHI’s  Board of Trustees is comprised of experienced professionals with diverse backgrounds, including earthquake science and engineering, international development, architecture, law, finance, and urban planning. Each has longstanding, strong ties in academic, business or government sectors. 

Joseph Tortorella

Joseph Tortorella joined the GHI Board in 2015. He is president of Silman, a structural engineering firm, which he joined in 1979. A registered professional engineer in 16 states plus Puerto Rico, he has supervised projects of historic preservation, renovation, adaptive reuse, alteration, new construction, and sustainable design. His major projects have included the High Line in New York, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, the iconic TWA flight center at JFK International, and Via Verde, a LEED Gold certified multi-housing complex on a brownfield site in the Bronx. Mr. Tortorella is active in numerous industry organizations: past president and member of Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY); president of the board of Center for Architecture; executive board member of New York New Visions in the evaluation of designs for redevelopment of the World Trade Center, executive committee member and chair of US national group of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), and former co-chair of the Critical and Commercial Building Working Group for the AIA Post Sandy Initiative.
