Mitigation Specialist | Aizawl, Mizoram, India
Lalrinpuii Tlau joined GHI as a Mitigation Specialist in January 2013 and is based in Aizawl, Mizoram in northeast India. She supports a comprehensive approach to reduce extreme earthquake and landslide risk in her fast-growing city. India’s National Disaster Management Authority has showcased this work as a model for landslide-prone cities. Ms. Tlau holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) and a Master of Philosophy (Mizoram University, India) and a Bachelor's degree in English (J.B College, Lunglei, India).
Ms. Tlau, GeoHazards International’s team, and local professionals developed “Effects of a Magnitude 7 Earthquake on Aizawl, Mizoram and Recommendations to Reduce Losses,” a scenario of a plausible earthquake and specific consequences. She now works closely with the Disaster Management & Rehabilitation Department and line departments of the Government of Mizoram and with the Aizawl Municipal Corporation as they implement new site development regulations and a plan of action to reduce landslide and seismic risk. She also coordinates GeoHazards International’s efforts to build technical capacities of Mizoram geologists, engineers, and planners. She has conducted school safety trainings with schools in Aizawl and with the Tibetan Children’s Village School in Dharamshala. She has answered call-in questions about earthquakes and landslides on All India Radio Aizawl live studio segments and has conducted a program on earthquake risk mitigation through a major church in Mizoram.
In westernmost Nepal, she has assisted GeoHazards International’s efforts to mitigate earthquake and landslide risk in the once remote but now urbanizing middle hills. Her previous work engaged with rural and urban vulnerable communities on a range of issues, including disaster management, solid waste management, advocacy, consumer rights, female sex workers, community organizing, health care and street children.
