You’re Invited! Webinar on Earthquake Desks: A Lifesaving Innovation for Nepal’s Schoolchildren

I would like to invite you to join us for an informative and inspiring webinar on our ongoing Earthquake Desk project.
Earthquake Desks are an innovative and cost-effective solution that can protect schoolchildren during earthquakes until their school buildings are made safer. The Desks offer a safety area below in which students can take shelter when shaking starts, providing protection from heavy falling debris. This interim solution is critical in places like Nepal, where there are vast numbers of vulnerable, collapse-prone school buildings, and fixing them all will take many decades.
During the webinar, our team and partners will share our progress on this ongoing, multi-year program and explain why this work is so important. You will hear about our efforts in customizing and prototyping the Earthquake Desk in Nepal, modeling the Desks using highly sophisticated computer simulations, and conducting rigorous laboratory tests of Nepal-made Earthquake Desk prototypes. Our team will also describe the important work of engaging with local schools, manufacturers, municipalities, and national stakeholders to assess if this solution is feasible in Nepal. Finally, we’ll look ahead to the next phase—training local manufacturers to mass produce quality Earthquake Desks and placing them in vulnerable school buildings.
